Bäckaskog Castle, located between 2 sparkling lakes, 18 km from Kristianstad,
was founded as a Premonstratensian monastery in the mid-13th century.
Parts of the old monastery church and the monks' kitchen are preserved in today's buildings.
At the Reformation in 1537, the monastery was annexed to the Danish crown. In 1584, Bäckaskog was donated to Crown Prince Christian IV's governor, Henrik Ramel. He and his son Henrik Ramel the Younger transformed the former monastery into a fortified castle during their time from 1584 to 1653. After the Peace of Roskilde in 1658, Bäckaskog became Swedish.
During the 19th century, Bäckaskog Castle was the summer residence of King Karl XV of Sweden.
The king stayed at Bäckaskog every summer from 1845 until his death in 1872.
Karl XV's dining room can still be used for large dinners today.
Karl XV's horse Shejk is buried in the forest area of the castle park, Shejk is said to still be seen running in the castle park as a ghost...
Today, Bäckaskog Castle is a hotel, restaurant and conference establishment.
The Swedish TV show "Stjärnorna på Slottet" (2012-2013 and 2021-2024) was filmed at Bäckaskog Castle.
